School Counselor

Hope Hersom, Guidance Counselor

I have been a school counselor for ten years, the first two years at the high school level and the last eight years in MSAD 5 and RSU13 at the elementary/middle school level.  My family and I enjoy living in Mid-Coast Maine.  Our newest addition to the family is a golden retriever, George, who makes sure I get my daily walk around town.  I also enjoy yoga and reading cozy mysteries.

Why you like to teach your grade or special area:

Being a school counselor is an absolute privilege!  I love meeting with students, listening to their concerns or successes and attempting to offer support and encouragement whenever possible.

Favorite student units:

I love helping students recognize and identify their feelings; something I wish I had been more adept at as a child.  Also, I absolutely love incorporating mindfulness strategies into some of my classroom guidance lessons, groups or individual counseling to assist students with self-regulation and improved attention.  Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment, non-judgmentally.  A primary strategy is to focus on the breath, using it as an anchor, which steadies us when the waters are rough.
